Terms of Service

Last updated: 28 September 2026

These terms set out how Murphy Masonry and Monumental Works carries out work for you. They are written in plain language so you know what to expect before any stone is cut.

01About these terms

These terms apply to all work carried out by Murphy Masonry and Monumental Works (“we”, “us”) for you (“you”, “the customer”). This includes new headstones and Celtic crosses, grave restoration, inscriptions, stone masonry for houses and garages, memorial stonework, and heritage repairs.

By requesting a quotation, placing an order, or allowing us to begin work, you accept these terms.

02Who we are

Murphy Masonry and Monumental Works is a stonemasonry and memorial business based in the west of Ireland, serving counties Mayo, Galway and Roscommon. You deal directly with us and the mason — not a call centre or an agent.

03Our services

  • New headstones and Celtic crosses, cut and set to the plot.
  • Grave restoration — cleaning, resetting and re-lettering where the family asks.
  • Inscriptions — an extra name, date or short line cut to sit with the original.
  • Stone masonry for houses, garages and outbuildings.
  • Memorial stonework — kerbs, tablets, ledgers and one-off pieces.
  • Heritage and repair work — lime pointing, fireplace restoration and storm damage.

Because much of this work is carried out by hand and to order, any timescale we give is guidance rather than a guarantee.

04Quotations

A quotation is an estimate based on the information you give us and on the stone available at the time. It is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued. A quotation is not a contract.

Work begins only when you confirm the order and any agreed deposit is paid. If site conditions, access, or the existing stone differ from what was described, the price may need to be revised — we will tell you before continuing.

05Orders and commissions

Memorial and bespoke work is made to order. Once stone is cut or letters are set out, changes may not be possible without additional cost.

Before cutting begins, we will confirm the design, wording, spelling and layout with you in writing or by photograph. Please check inscriptions carefully. We cannot be responsible for errors that you have approved in writing.

06Memorial inscriptions and sensitive work

Names, dates and inscriptions are provided by you and are treated with respect and in confidence. We do not publish photographs of memorials or inscriptions on this website or elsewhere without your written permission.

07Payment

For memorial work, a deposit is normally required on order with the balance due on completion. For larger building work, a staged arrangement may be agreed and set out in writing. Work remains our property until paid for in full.

08Cancellations and changes

You may cancel before work has begun. If you cancel after work has begun, you remain liable for the work already carried out and for any stone cut or materials ordered on your behalf.

If you wish to change the design or wording after work has started, we will do our best to accommodate the change and will quote any additional cost before proceeding.

09Site access and conditions

You must provide safe and reasonable access to the plot, wall, or property, and tell us in advance about any known hazards. We are not responsible for delays caused by ground conditions, weather, or the actions of third parties such as cemetery authorities or neighbours.

10Your responsibilities

You must own, or have authority to act on, the grave plot, wall, or property where the work is to be carried out. For cemetery work, you may need to follow cemetery rules and obtain the relevant permission. We can advise on what is usually required.

11Our liability

We carry out work with proper skill and care. We are not liable for:

  • Subsidence or ground movement after work is set.
  • Existing faults in old stone beyond the work we are asked to carry out.
  • Weather staining or natural ageing of stone over time.
  • Loss or damage caused by third parties.

Our liability for any claim arising from our work is limited to the value of the work carried out for you.

12Complaints

We want you to be happy with the work. If something is not right, please contact us promptly and we will put it right where reasonably possible.

13Intellectual property

Drawings, designs, and lettering layouts that we prepare remain our work until paid for in full. Photographs we take may be kept for our own record unless you ask us not to.

14Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The date shown above is the date of the last revision.

15Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland, and any dispute will be dealt with in the Irish courts.
